How to Apply for HR Licence in NSW? An Overview

Before we discuss what it takes to apply for the Heavy Vehicle (HR) licence in New South Wales, let us discuss what actually class HR licence is.

It is the licence that is needed to drive trucks or buses with a Gross Vehicle Weight (GVM) of over 8 tonnes and with three axles or more, a towed trailer a GVM of 9 or less and the bendy buses. As per the traffic rules, although all these vehicles are articulated, they are considered as rigid vehicles.

What is the eligibility to apply for HR Licence?

If you are looking forward to obtain a Heavy Rigid License in Blacktown or any other city in NSW, you must hold a Class C licence or equivalent for at least two years or more than that. However, that must not include the learner licence. Besides, the number of days that you have held the P1 licence will be taken into consideration, but it will not make you eligible to drive a HR vehicle, or upgrade yourself to a HR licence holder, till you hold a P2 or Full Class C Driving Licence.

Options to obtain the HR Licence

There are two options to consider when it comes to obtaining a HR Licence.

Condition HR licence: This will make you eligible to drive any automatic HR or a Syncromesh HR vehicle (this is a vehicle that comes with a normal clutch manual like a car). This course is generally conducted in an automatic HR vehicle and usually a 1 day course, provided you have satisfied all the eligibility criteria of holding the HR licence.

Unrestricted Heavy Rigid Licence: This training is conducted in a Heavy Rigid Vehicle fitted with a road or crash ranger gearbox, which needs double clutching to change the gear and to match the engine revolution with the road speed. It is a challenging task to start with, but can be mastered with practice. This can be possible only when you have unrestricted authority to drive every type of HR vehicles once you obtain the HR licence.

Therefore you see, it is not that easy to obtain the HR licence in NSW. That is why, it is absolutely imperative to undergo training in a reputed training school to obtain the Heavy Rigid Licence in Blacktown or in any other place of NSW.

This is where getting enrolled in a reputed training school is so very important to obtain the licence. That is the basic of obtaining the licence at one go.
